Cheap Therapy

August 20th, 2008

I call it cheap therapy. That gushing, near-religious, poured-from-the-body stress release that comes after writing my heart out for hours each day, delivers more balm to my soul than years of psychoanalysis.

There were eight of them. Eight family members and friends died in five short years. I was a neophyte in this death thing. This clamping-down-on-your-heart, ripping-a-hole-in-your-soul, death thing. It stunk. Badly. I was forty-three when my grandmother died. It floored me. The shock that it could really happen, that they could actually leave me, was overwhelming.

The guilt that had ridden hard on my back for the past twenty years came at me with a rush. I should have visited more. Called more. Written more. But the three baby daughters that we’d had in two years had consumed every ounce of our energy. We’d fallen into bed each night exhausted, and had awakened tired, but happy, each morning. The thought of a ten-hour trip home had seemed insurmountable with three little ones in car seats and diapers. So we put off the visits home for a long, long time.

The next death came in a single, whooshing blow. My colleague at work, with whom I’d shared an office for eight wonderful years, died suddenly of a heart attack. Then my father-in-law, my grandfather, and so on. I struggled to make sense of it. People were disappearing rapidly.

And then it happened. My father was diagnosed with cancer in the same month that his mother died of Alzheimer’s Disease.
We had a summer of hope. And then the disease hit again, and he was gone. Gone for good. Gone for real. In six short months, he was diagnosed, treated, and then he disappeared.

I was crushed. Completely shattered. This was bad. The worst.

I walked a lot. I trudged through the autumn woods, as the crispy leaves eddied around my feet. I heard his voice whispering in the breeze. The need to write was insistent. Urgent.

The pieces were gaudy and full of redolent poetry. The words painted my grief. Each time I walked and mourned, I’d return home and write. Again. And again. And again.

Getting the words on paper was a salve for my battered soul. Although I’d always known I would write a mystery series someday, I’d thought it would be when the kids were grown and I had retired.

Then it hit me. I would write a testimony to my father. I’d model my protagonist after Dad. I began to write Double Forté. My hero was a music professor, like Dad. He gardened with a passion, like Dad. He embraced the arts, like Dad. And he assiduously tended to his musical spirit, like Dad. He played Chopin etudes with wild abandon to clear his mind and feed his soul. And he cooked magnificent feasts for his family from his gardens that burgeoned with exotic vegetables.

As the book began to take shape, so did the characters. Gus LeGarde’s secretary, Maddy, became the reincarnation of my Grandma Lena. Oscar and Millie Stone were near replicas of my maternal grandparents. I found comfort in the creation of the scenes that included them. And as the process of writing one book became easier, the next, and the next, and the next flowed effortlessly from my fingertips until I stopped to breathe. I created eight full novels in five short years.

As this healing process provides me with therapy, it also affords an escape to a parallel universe where I control my characters’ destiny. I like it. A lot. I invent the bad guys, neatly dispatch them, rescue my hero from certain death, and cement the intricate relationships between my cast members.

This remarkable outlet allows the creative juices to flow and provides a safe haven for my imagination to flourish. I’m hooked, big time. There’s no stemming the tide. I fight for time to write, feeling cheated if I don’t get my daily “fix.” And when the latest chapter is keyed in, or the monthly essay penned, a deep sigh of relief is expelled. I’m freed. I’m sated. I’m going to be okay.

Yep. I’m going to be just fine. And best of all, there’s no co-payment.

Know Fear!

August 19th, 2008

We live in a society defined by its insecurities. We fear the loss of our jobs, our health, our money, our relationships, our sense of control. Here is a sampling of some less common fears to illustrate how far human fears reach:

- Dendrophobia - fear of trees
- Chronomentrophobia - fear of clocks
- Pentheraphobia - fear of a mother-in-law
- Consultophobia - fear of management consultants (I made that one up!)
- Xanthrophobia - fear of the color yellow
- Blennophobia - fear of slime

You get the point. Fear is deeply imbedded in many aspects of our day-to-day lives. Check out the evening news. Many of the stories are posed to get our attention by playing on our fears. A headline that reads, “Are you poisoning your family at the dinner table?” is guaranteed to get attention. So is the one asking, “Are your children safe at school?” In fact, when I was a youngster, I remember my mother saying, “We can watch the six o’clock news and not eat or watch the 11 o’clock news and not sleep!”

Since we fear most that which is unknown to us, defining moments of change can occur when we choose to know our fears.

Fear keeps us in the background, convincing us we can never accomplish our dreams. It is the voice of fear that tells us to keep quiet and to stay within our comfort zones. Without question, it is fear that stops us in our tracks toward our goals and limits what we are willing to try. For many, it is fear that makes us lead a smaller life. But fear can also motivate us.

For Li Vo, the young mother of two, facing her fear of heights was the least of her worries one night in the 1970s. Looking much younger than her years, she had joined the crowd of teenagers as they marched through her neighborhood toward the harbor that evening. Her Communist neighbors hadn’t noticed her slip from her modest apartment and into the crowd. Her destination: America.

As the group neared the harbor, she glanced carefully at every vessel they passed until she saw the ship that would transport her and her family out of Saigon and to freedom, a journey they had saved for and plotted the past three years.

Somewhere, from out of the crowd, her husband Hui joined her with their two children. “You must climb up,” her husband instructed her.

As she gazed up at the looming side of the ship, her old fear returned, but only for a moment as she gazed into the expectant faces of her children. “Follow Mommy,” she encouraged, hooking her foot onto the first rung of the flimsy rope ladder. “We will be fine.”

As she slowly took step after step, she allowed herself to look down, only long enough to make sure the children were following. At last, she reached the top and climbed over the ship’s railing.

At 2 a.m., as the ship steamed out of the harbor, loaded with new refugees, Li and her family were on board and safe, leaving their native Vietnam far behind. Counting stops at refugee camps in Hong Kong and the Philippines, it took almost a year for the Vo family to finally reach the U.S. and the hospitality of their sponsoring family.

Even today, some 30 years later, Li remembers her defining moment. It was the moment she faced down her lifelong fear of heights to carry her family to freedom.

Knowing our fears and facing them will free us also.

The acronym F.E.A.R. stands for “False Evidence Appearing Real.” It’s a true definition of fear. It describes how our minds can weave together false tales of how situations will turn out.

If I ask my boss about that promotion, I will get blacklisted. If I terminate Joan, I know she will sue us. If I don’t nail this project, I will be off the fast track. If I don’t get that bonus, I will never be able to afford our new mortgage payment. If I succeed at this job, I don’t think I can take it to the next level again.

Fear is really a secondary emotion, not a primary one. Since we jump to fear so reflexively, we fail to think about our first reaction, which is the cause for our fear.

Causes of our behavior are easier to address than the symptoms, like fear. For example, our fear of flying might a symptom of a high need for control, and giving up that control produced tremendous anxiety - fear. Our fear of public speaking (#1 on the world’s list of fears) might be a symptom of insecurities - we are not expert enough or prepared enough to give a fluent speech.

The key is to identify our primary response to a situation or change and think about it. When we stop to think about our fear, we can determine if our primary response is insecurity, sense of loss, need for control or discomfort with uncertainty. Once we honestly identify our primary response, we start to know our fear more intimately. Then, we can equip ourselves with information and experiences to fearlessly manage change in our lives. We must think about and act on our fear instead of simply reacting to it.
This thought reminds me of the prison warden who told the condemned man to order whatever he wanted for his last meal, and he offered suggestions, “Lobster, Filet Mignon, Beef Wellington or shrimp?”

“No,” the prisoner said. “I’ll just have a bowl of mushrooms.”

“Why mushrooms?” the warden asked him.

“I’ve always been afraid to eat them.”

Don’t wait until it’s too late to know your fears. Fear is a natural reaction to the challenges of life and leadership. To grow, change and excel, we must face them.

Excellent leaders listen and watch for what they fear. They seek feedback and other signs that might tell them to take a hard left off a straight path.

Since the information leaders receive can often be filtered to some degree, it’s up to the leader to get the full story. How do we do that? We can look for dissenting opinions, assumptions and perspectives to minimize our blind spots. If all we hear is “yes,” we should be careful. In fact, we shouldn’t take “yes” for an answer!

We can’t wait for different opinions to come to us… we must seek them out. Excellent leaders seek “no holds barred” input from employees in meetings, one-on-one updates, surveys, e-mails, in the break room or even after hours.

One of the most common defining moments I hear from employees is the time their manager asked them for input. It’s amazing how something so simple can be so powerful. By asking for feedback to stay ahead of the fear curve, you can create a defining moment for you team - you can redefine “how things are done around here.”

Our greatest fear should be that we will waste a moment… a potentially defining moment.

Leadership excellence is rooted in a fearless confidence that what is discovered will pave a new, brighter path for the team. Know fear!

Three Important Things All Hospitals Need

August 14th, 2008

Running a hospital is not an easy task. However there are a few things that you can do in order to make the job easier and more profitable (or efficient if you are a non profit company).

First you need to make sure that your staff is all well payed. This may seem like a no brainier, but you would be surprised that not everyone understands this. If your staff is making so little money that they are not able to bring in ends meet, then they will not want to stay at your business.

Secondly you need to make sure that you have affordable equipment that you can keep up to date and keep it maintained. The best way to do this is to stick with a used ultrasound dealer. If you are able to do this then you can save a LOT of money over the long run of the business.

Lastly you want to make sure that you have a good website available to those online who are looking for you. I recommend using a good quality firm such as this firm that does web design in Riverside. Going with a place like this will get you the top quality work that you need done in order to hold your hospital at the top of its class.

If you keep business mindedness at the for front of your thinking running and keeping a hospital properly staffed should not be a problem at all.

An International Christmas

August 12th, 2008

Christmas is once again just around the corner and to me and every other regular person on this planet who goes out for a walk or who watches a bit of the television it is blatantly obvious. Even in Taiwan were X-mass was a few years ago a strange ritual that the ‘white devils’ participated reverently in, Santa Claus and his merry reindeer are becoming permanent features in daily life (some families have confused x-mass decorations with just plain old decorations so various coffee shops and residential houses keep have trees and flashing lights all yea round)!

Most x-mass celebrants associate X-mass with snow apart from Australians who suitably ignore the fact that X-mass occurs in the middle of summer and who continue to crack open cans of foster and have barbecues just like any other day of the year! Oh, and in Brazil were Papai Noel will do his rounds wearing a lovely ensemble of silk due to the summer heat! Japan and Korea can get away with the idea of snow drops falling and a “white X-mass” as these countries have snow as part and parcel of living there, but Taiwan (apart from a freak snowfall one year on the peak of the highest mountain) has no relationship or feeling to the white stuff at all. They Taiwanese do though continue to emphasize X-mass with snow as if the two are inseparable and so shops and department stores eagerly decorate their spaces with snowmen and false snow and to turn down air-conditioning units in attempt to create the atmosphere!

Meanwhile, over in Singapore were the temperatures never vary from an average 30 degrees all year round keen enthusiasts attend Ice Bars in an attempt to really create the perfect atmosphere. One Ice Bar is located behind Boat Quay and near to the Irish Bar. Having just had a few pints of Guinness and feeling suitably warm with the effects of the night heat and the alcohol coursing through the veins what could be better than entering a freezer? And this is what the Ice Bar is underneath the gloss and the glamour. It is a large room, filled with chairs and tables and with drinks just like any other bar around the world; except that the temperature inside has been forcibly reduced to below zero. The bar has proved quite popular and is frequently attended by Singaporeans who have purchased Arctic Jackets and Thermal Underwear so that they may attend without getting frostbite. In equal proportions pissed Scotsmen and bemused Canadians attend in T-shirts and wonder what all the fuss is about! At Christmas though the profits at this bar quadruple as Christmas is recreated with atmosphere and it actually looks like a white X-mass in the thirty foot square walk-in-freezer. A spot of white x-mass that only 0.01% of the Singaporean population can attend, due to the requirements of space!

On the Internet X-mass is really a windfall for spammers! A time for placing Christmassy sort of words into spam emails in the hope that those checking their mails will assume that Santa is in fact real after all. And just a click away is the opportunity to book a flight to Lapland to see dear Santa and his wife at home in Lapland! As Ibia.co.uk advertise:

This is Lapland, the spellbound, un-spoilt region in the north of Finland, so beautiful that Father Christmas chose it as his home. Costs approximately 799 pounds for a one-night stay departing on 21ststDecember. NB: that after this date Santa is too busy delivering presents to be able to entertain guests.

Once upon a time many children used to leave little notes on windowsills and on mantelpieces, a belief forced on them by parents that Santa would be along soon. But as technology advances so does the ways and means to communicate with Father Christmas and Santa Claus.com offers the following feature:

HO!! Ho!! ho!! Write a letter to Santa Claus? Yes kids its true! Just finish this letter… Santa’s waiting for *you*! From the North Pole, Santa will send your reply… faster than Rudolph the reindeer can fly!! Merry Christmas!

Please don’t feel neglected if you have no access to a computer, Santa still accepts mail through the old-style postal system. In fact Children continue to write to Santa from all over the world and in a little city located on the Artic Circle in Lapland a Post Office, appropriately named the Santa Claus Main Post Office receives some 300,000 letters annually. The rush usually occurs at X-mass time (slightly alleviated by some confused Australians who feel they should send their X-mass wishes during their winter) so make sure to send letters early so that will arrive before X-mass and not afterwards. By simply addressing envelopes to Santa Claus, Babbo Natale (Italian), Weichnachtsmann (Germany), ‘aVl {sing daan lou jan} (Taiwan) or to Pere Noel (France) with the address of Father Christmas Street, Lapland or to “were Santa Claus Lives” all mail arrives faithfully and unread. It is also quite possible should the return address and senders name be eligible that a reply will be sent from some busy elf, minus of course the large wish list made up of toys and games (cars and a new spouse for some adults who still believe in it all).

Wherever a person comes from Christmas comes faithfully every year. It comes bringing presents of no small size, of food in large and rich quantities and it comes with fanfare, bright and late nights and lots of happy memories until the New Year brings in its own to replace those of a week gone by. As children still believe that Santa is really going to give them what they want and as shop owners and retailers revel in increased sales; as reverends and fanatics increasingly attempt to revive the spirit of religion into the holiday season (even though its now well known that X-mass was never really about religion after-all) and as non-believers increasingly attempt to do the opposite Christmas is a time for families to be together, for loved ones to meet and anywhere except in Brazil, fires to be lighted and for the warmth to seep in (Australians light a fire for the barbecue, the a tin of fosters provides the warmth).

The true spirit of X-mass was invoked during those terrible years of World War One when Tommy and Fritz laid down arms to play football in no-mans land. A little-known Scottish poet, Frederick Niven, summed up the true essence of X-mass in his “A Carol from Flanders,” with the final verse of;

O ye who read this truthful rime
From Flanders, kneel and say:
God speed the time when every day
Shall be as Christmas Day

How to get a 12 Months Free Line Rental Contract

August 11th, 2008

A slightly peculiar way to obtain a cheap phone is by using a free line rental cell phone contract. The fact they are something of a secret is the reason they are the best mobile cell phone contracts currently on offer.

A free line rental cell phone contract is a form of cashback by redemption package. With this type of deal you must continue to pay the bill as usual for the earlier months until you are able to get your cash refund. At a later time in the contract you must remember to to claim the cost of the phone back from the vendor which initially offered you the phone.

In reality a free line rental mobile contract will not cost a penny to operate. This is true only so long as the customer concerned properly makes their request for for redemption. This is not nearly as easy as customers are told because mobile retailers stick in a few tricks with the small print of free line rental packages so as to reduce the quantity of successful claimants.

The most significant pitfall of free line rental offers is the fact that if the worst happens and the store go out of business you have now way to get your money back. 12 month free line rental is a compromise, as they are can only be obtained on inferior handsets.

In spite of the complications of free line rental contracts they are absolutely legitimate and customers are able to obtain totally free cell phone for 12 months.

Bar none, the best priced method of purchasing a free line rental phone contract is on the WWW. As free line rental products are a slightly unusual product it is a good idea to make use of a comparison site to find the cheapest products on the day.

August 9th, 2008

From our deconstruction of hundreds of Hollywood blockbusters at at www.managing-creativity.com

The Hero’s Journey is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the Hollywood movies we have deconstructed are based on this template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters.

The Hero’s Journey:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #7

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #7

Well, look at you go! You keep moving closer and closer towards your goal. How extraordinary are you? Do you want to know? You are the most extraordinary person on this earth!! To quote Wayne Dyer, we are human beings having a spiritual experience. With this in mind, how can you be anything but Divine as a spiritual being! Keep this in mind when you’re on your journey to achieve weight loss.

Did you do your homework assignment and include exercise in your routine? Was it great to dance around shaking that booty? Your body must have been in heaven shouting, “More, More, More!” For me, I incorporate a few different things: walking, dancing, yoga, pilates, walking and running. I have to get outside and breathe in all that God has created. In fact, I’ve been thinking about running a marathon. Can you imagine at the age of 49 doing this? I’m going to start out with a 5K in the Spring and then go from there. I have a person in my life who is serving as my coach to offer encouragement to let me know I can do it. I have to exercise as it boosts my energy level and makes me feel good. Turning 50 next year is transcending me into experiencing everything as if it is all brand new. I feel as if I’m 21 again. I have no wrinkles–ya, right!

I’ve been coming into contact with so many people who have forgiveness at the core of their weight issues. I know a previous lesson focused on forgiveness and I would like to focus on it again in this lesson.

Whom do you still need to forgive? Include yourself in this process. What thoughts do you still have that are not connected to God? Write them down now.

Writing will help you get your emotions out. Do you journal? If you don’t, I would highly recommend it. I journal each night and this is where I express my thoughts and then I also include gratitude for those things that I have and those things I have yet to receive. I believe everything is right there waiting for me.

After the first of the year, I will be offering a FREE one hour teleconference call–you only pay for the cost of the phone call. Isn’t this exciting? You’ll be on the phone call with others who are going through the same thing. What a great opportunity to connect. I can’t wait!

Don’t ever give up! I read something that Donald Trump said. If you’re going to think, you might as well think BIG! So think BIG weight loss. Those extra pounds are just melting away. You can do it! You’re releasing the pain, the stress so that you manifest all that is yours by Divine right. You’re going to look great in that slinky outfit. I’m so proud of you for focusing on yourself. God is so proud of you too! Go for it!

Love and hugs,

Tami
