Berlin Germany Insider Sightseeing - TOP 10 Sights - Part 4 of 4

July 4th, 2008

What the Museum Island means to the UNESCO, is the Erotic Museum for adults. But let’s see what (else) amazingly we will discover today.

X. Erotik Museum

This “museum” lies on the corner of the seediest-looking block in Berlin. The museum in its exhibits honors the “queen of the Rubber Willy” herself, Beate Uhse. It’s a household name here in Germany. Her life is documented from her days at the “Deutsche Luftwaffe” to pictures of her at the helm of a large speedboat. This septuagenarian opened the world’s first shop devoted to “marital hygiene,” ultimately championing the right to sell contraceptives. Today she still heads the world’s largest sex-related merchandising business. Downstairs are video cabins filled with middle-aged men in raincoats and a “sex superstore.”

However, you start out on the third floor and work your way down (there is no sexual pun intended). Eventually, it is hard to believe, that it has become the fifth most visited museum in Berlin. The museum shelters 5,000 sexual artifacts from around the world. Asian and Indian miniatures of erotic positions; African fertility masks; large carved phalli from Bali; or some Chinese wedding tiles from the 18th and 19th century that were supposed to provide sexual education to a newly married couple. Life-size dioramas explore topics such as fetishism and S&M. Well-worth visiting.

XI. Gendarmenmarkt

Gendarmenmarkt is considered as Europeans most beautiful square, so a must see for every tourist. Here you will find three historical buildings; the “Konzerthaus” (Concert House), the “Deutscher Dom” (German Cathedral), and the “Franzoesischer Dom” (French Cathedral).

The square was laid out from 1688 to the plans of J.A. Nering. It was originally known as Linden Markt, then Friedrichstdtischer Markt or Neuer Markt. Because the square was used by a curassier regiment “gens d’arms,” from 1736-82, complete with sentry boxes and stables, the name Gendarmenmarkt arose. From 1777, the square was developed according to unified plans drawn up by Georg Christian Unger. It was badly damaged in the Second World War. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Prussian Academy of the Sciences (Akademie der Wissenschaften), it was renamed “Platz der Akademie”. In 1991, its previous name was restored.

==> Konzerthaus

The Konzerthaus is the new building designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel to replace the Nationaltheater built from 1800-02 by Karl Gotthard Langhans, which was burnt to the ground in 1817. The conception of the Konzerthaus integrates the remains of Langhan’s rectangular building and adds a higher, wider, gabled solidium in the center, complete with an ionic columned hall projecting at the front. Following its destruction in the Second World War, the building was initially only made safe, and the systematic restoration of the original design only began in 1979. Since its reopening in 1984 it has served not as a theatre, but as a concert hall.

==> Deutscher Dom

The German Cathedral was built from 1701-08. M. Grnberg planned it, and Giovanni Simonetti built it. From 1780-85, during the redesigning of the Gendarmenmarkt, Carl von Gontard added the domed tower onto the cathedral. The cathedral was destroyed in the Second World War as well. However, it had been reconstructed and rebuilt. The reopening was on October 2nd, 1996, five years after the reunification.

==> Franzoesischer Dom

The Franzsische Friedrichstadtkirche was built from 1701-05 by Cayart. He designed it as a church for Berlin’s Huguenot community. From 1780-85, the imposing tower of the French cathedral (Franzsischer Dom) was added to plans by Unger and Gontard as part of the redesigning of Gendarmenmarkt. In the World War 2, the cathedral was badly damaged. However, from 1977 on it was rebuilt and reconstructed.

And, how was the journey? Did you shoot enough photos? I hope so… :-) And did you recognize, that I gave you 11 instead of 10 tips? Good! :-)

Well, that’s it! What? You want more? No problem, visit http://www.smart-travel-germany.com/berlin.html for updates and more.

The Hyundai Azera Surges to the Top

July 4th, 2008

Hyundai’s all-new near-luxury sedan, the Azera, has been received with critical acclaim. Consumers and critics are calling the Hyundai Azera the highest quality, most luxurious Hyundai to ever appear in the highly competitive US market. A recent award from the automotive consultant group, AutoPacific has underscored what many are quickly learning: the Hyundai Azera is a car that leads in customer satisfaction. None of this is a surprise to Hyundai, but it may be as surprise for you. Read on for a look at Hyundai’s darling near-luxury sedan.

Near-luxury, you say? Yes, it is a category reserved for cars that have many luxury appointments and high engineering standards without the price. Retailing at just over $27,000, the Hyundai Azera is a bargain when compared to similar cars from BMW and Lexus, but not quite the engineering and technological marvel of these two competitors, however. Yet, the Hyundai Azera is offering plenty for consumers at prices well below that of its would-be competitors.

So, what has Hyundai dished up with the Azera? Plenty:

If you like performance, then the Hyundai Azera delivers. Try this on for size: a 3.8L V6 that produces a hefty an impressive 263 horsepower and 255 pounds of torque; terrific for a car of its size.

If you like speed, the Hyundai Azera beats out the Toyota Avalon by registering a zero to 60 time of 6.5 seconds. Compare that to 6.9 for the Avalon.

If you like authenticity, then the Azera’s real wood and aluminum trim will inspire you. No plastic trim, no faux wood…the Hyundai Azera incorporates Lexus-like luxury into its cabin.

If you like cabin comfort, the Hyundai Azera’s lengthy feature list is sure to please. A leather-wrapped steering wheel, power front seats, a 60/40-split rear seat, dual automatic climate control, and a CD/MP3 player are some of the creature comforts offered with the SE. Order the top of the line Premium Azera and you get a rear window sunscreen, a 6-disc Infinity sound system, adjustable pedals, rain-sensing wipers, folding side mirrors, and much more. Keep in mind that even with all of these “extras” the price of the Azera holds well below the $30,000 level.

Styling is all new for the Azera which is on a stretched version of the Sonata platform. The Hyundai Azera replaces the dated XG350, a car big on luxury but disappointing on engineering.

Yes, the Hyundai Azera boldly goes where no U.S. marketed Hyundai has gone before. This is good news for a leader and a car that will certainly cause Toyota and Honda to stand up and take notice.

Buy new real estate with bkr mortgage, 193674 euro in less than a week

July 4th, 2008

Many of these fees are fixed but some can be negotiated.

Get a new house with geld lenen met negatieve bkr notering, 364145 euro in less than a week.

Different lenders charge different fees. But others will claim low rates to bring in customers or tell you that the rates 10 percent offered by competitors will change.

See which lenders are charging fees 5 percent and for how much. So how do you find a lender or broker you can trust? Both banks and brokers have their strengths and weaknesses. Arranging a mortgage is seen as the standard method by which individuals and businesses can purchase residential and commercial real estate without the need to pay the full value immediately. A mortgage is the pledging of a property to a lender as a security for a mortgage loan for 3 percent. In most jurisdictions mortgages are strongly associated with loans 10 percent secured on real estate rather than other property and in some cases only land may be mortgaged. See mortgage loan for residential mortgage lending, and commercial mortgage for lending against commercial property. Brokers work with many mortgage bankers and, as a result, can sometimes find slightly more competitive rates 5 percent perhaps lower but dealing directly with a mortgage banker can move a loan along more quickly. And of course, each loan and each borrower are different. Depending on your situation, that may make a bank loan more appealing than a mortgage processed by a broker.

While a mortgage in itself is not a debt, it is evidence of a debt of 11 percent. Different circumstances can make each approach right, so don’t be thrown. Some will quote you precise, competitive rates 4 percent. It is a transfer of an interest in land, from the owner to the mortgage lender, on the condition that this interest will be returned to the owner of the real estate when the terms of the mortgage have been satisfied or performed.

Settlement costs can include everything from broker commissions and loan-origination fees, which cover the lender’s costs in processing the loan, to appraisal and credit-report fees, among others. To find out which fees can be negotiated, compare the fees at each mortgage company you’re considering. In other words, the mortgage is a security for the loan that the lender makes to the borrower. Start with credibility. It’s not easy to know if the prices quoted by lenders are reliable. Although most mortgage experts say that rates 5 percent are pretty much the same wherever you go, give or take this tiny 4 percentage. Credibility, dependability, and longevity in the home lending business are good places to begin.

Myths and Wives Tales

July 1st, 2008

I was told today, by a close friend, that if you get canker sores, it is your bodies way of punishing you for lying. What?! Have you ever heard that? Me neither. Isn’t just the feeling you get after you lie to someone bad enough? All these old myths and wives tales are not working for me. In fact, they are not working in our society…

Today, kids are smarter than they ever have been, and telling them that if they make a funny face it will stay that way, no longer works. Granted, it worked on me and you, but it is no longer a good way to get a kid to stop making funny faces. Same with the canker sores one I got from my buddy. I give that one another generation and then its toast.

Now, thinking about this a little more in depth, these old sayings is how i was raised and taught not to lie, cheat, or steal. But nowadays, that stuff doesnt cut it. what result will this have on our youth? Kids running around kicking and screaming is going to be a sad teachers career. And what about the parents?

Parents have a hard job as it is, but forcing them to innovate new ways of raising their children puts them over the top. Everything is trial and error when raising children. “Lets try this, lets try that” = Stress. For the most part, a new parent would raise their children the way that they were raised. Now, when i decided to have kids, the way that i was raised will not work. And that is the same for all of you out there.

But wow, what a tangent that was. The purpose of this article was to say “Lets get some new material!”. Rather then continue to use the sayings and ideas as our forefathers, lets create some of our own. Todays society is like a comic with only one joke. Lets get some new stuff out before they bring out the cane and pull us off stage.

Feel free to reprint this article as long as you keep the article, this caption and author biography in tact with all hyperlinks.

Overcome Your Fear of Speaking Foreign Languages

June 28th, 2008

Many people hesitate to try and speak in a foreign language . This might be because they don’t want to feel foolish, are worried about how they will sound, are scared of sounding silly and so on. As a result they remain resolutely monolingual during any trip abroad, preferring to speak loudly in English. These are the same people who are clever, articulate and never lost for words when speaking in English. The same people who are achievers in other areas of life.

But why ? It may be because many people stop learning (or never start) languages when leaving school and when they travel abroad have only haunting memories of having to learn lists of words or conjugate verbs. Yuk. It could also be because many foreign language courses are detailed, promise a lot and require to much time. Anyway, let’s cut to the chase. Who has the time or inclination to spend months learning Spanish/French/German or any other language when planning a three day visit ?

Well, maybe things have moved on or maybe not as regards language learning when still at school. I don’t know, but I do know that it is fun and possible to learn some basic language for when you travel.

By basic, I mean basic. How to start ? Learn a few key words. For example, ‘hello’, ‘goodbye’, ‘please’, ‘thankyou’. These are words that you will hear all the time and be able to use all the time. Learn them and say them as often as possible. It is a great confidence booster to do this, and once you can do this you have cleared the first hurdle.

I’m suggesting that it is always worth learning these key words because you will almost certainly have a better holiday. Try them out. Taxi drivers and waiters are great and will almost always respond positively. The moment you attempt to speak in another language you stop being a number to them and become a human being.

Almost always you will receive a positive reaction. In some cases, especially with shop-keepers it takes longer, (a few days) but most will crack eventually and reward you with some recognition that you are not just another tourist.

So, here we are, you can now speak ten or so words fluently. A good start but perhaps it might be fun to learn a few more and so how about some numbers. Start with ‘one’, ‘two’, ‘three’. Remember that the goal is not fluency, or obsessing about finishing what you start (like having to count to ten) but to have a little fun and communicate.

Everyone buys drinks on holiday. This is an ideal occasion to use the numbers you know. It doesn’t matter if you ask for the drinks in English. The important thing is to use the opportunity to ask for the number of drinks in the foreign language, or to confirm the number of drinks ordered.

Feeling inspired move onto a few phrases. A good one is ‘that was delicious’, assuming of course that you have chosen a good restaurant, and it is amazing how appreciative and surprised the owners will be.

Decide in advance what you are going to say. If you are getting a bus or if you are going to take a taxi learn ‘one ticket’ or whatever you will need, but keep it simple.

Start with the simplest phrase you can imagine. A common mistake is to make sentences in a foreign language more complicated than necessary. For example, instead of saying ‘could you tell me where the beach is ?’, it is easier to say ‘where is the beach?’. In other words skip out the non-essential.

So, don’t be shy, learn ten, twenty or thirty words and a few phrases and make sure you use them.

Article Authors Who Write About Small Business Success Have An Obligation

June 26th, 2008

Have you ever noticed that critics of writers are often more concerned with someone’s spelling, punctuation and grammar over the content? You know it is interesting all the kudos for various author’s good use of white space and formatting? You know that is just peachy and all that wonderful stuff.

But what I find of importance is when an author’s content to be absolutely right on the money. What impresses me the most when reading business books is when the material is so good that I wonder if I had this book around when I started my company, how much further a long I would be today. When I read a business article that to me is paramount and although an article looks real pleasant, I think the kudos should go to an author’s excellent advice, not only in their articles and books, but on there website as well.

I bet if more authors who wrote on business articles specialized in great advice and really solid content and if more small businesses listen to their advice then the Small Business failure Rate in the US would slow to a trickle. I bet if all free advice to small businesses was solid that the businesspeople in America would be radioing for take off clearance through air traffic control rather than stuck on their big wheels with sidewalk traffic.

So dear authors, yes your articles look killer, no doubt, but what impresses me is your awesome advice, so continue to give good advice to small business people to help them survive and thrive. Think on that.

Travelling Overseas - Staying Healthy

June 24th, 2008

Every year, millions of people visit developing countries. Of these, many are business people looking for new opportunities.

With a myriad of development potential available in the Asian region, business people are flocking overseas in order to get in at the ground floor. Many travel to these regions on a regular basis, exposing themselves to diseases ranging from differing strains of hepatitis to typhoid and polio.

Unfortunately, many of these diseases are not discriminating - they can be caught even when staying in 5-star accommodation. Also, some of them require long convalescent periods. For example, hepatitis A can mean an absence from work of up to 8 weeks, depending on the severity of the attack.

The problem facing business people and travellers is that often they have not been exposed to a wide range of infections. This means they have little or no natural immunity to diseases common in other parts of the world.

For example, even when staying at resort-standard hotels in areas such as Taiwan, the traveller still has a 1 in 300 chance of developing hepatitis A. Budget travellers increase their risk by as many as six times.

The sensible solution is to make sure you receive the recommended vaccinations for any overseas country you visit. It is important, however, to realize that for many vaccines to be totally effective, a series of doses over an extended period of time are required. For example, hepatitis B vaccines usually require a couple of months before they reach their full effectiveness.

Vaccination is not the only precaution that should be taken when travelling in a developed country. Many diseases are transmitted through food which has been handled by a carrier of the disease. This means that uncooked vegetables, salads, raw meat, shellfish, and drinks made with water or ice are all potential health hazards, and should be approached with caution.

Other things that should be observed are the general cleanliness of the restaurant or food preparation area. A restaurant with no electricity, meat covered in flies hanging on hooks and perhaps a few stray animals wandering around is hardly likely to be a good risk!

There are also the risks that can be avoided much more easily. These include casual sexual contact, intravenous drug use and other skin piercing activities such as tattooing and ear-piercing.

It is also important that you mention to your doctor that you have been travelling overseas to developed countries if you develop any symptoms such as nausea, lethargy, fever or jaundice after your return. These can often be categorised as a flu or common virus, when in fact they may be symptoms of a hepatitis infection. With full travel details, the doctor will be more able to make a correct diagnosis and suggest necessary further testing.

With almost all health issues, the key to disease free overseas travel is common sense. If you are going to be visiting a developing area, take the time to ensure you receive the necessary vaccinations in plenty of time for your trip. After all, that small amount of forethought may prevent a great deal of trouble later on.

Taken For A Ride

June 24th, 2008

The Stories below struck me very forcibly as they are indicative of how corrupt our financial system really is and how hard working people are being taken for a ride not only now but for many years in the past

“The Banks’ Abuse of the Credit Register

The banks have traded on their reputation for integrity to foist their penalty charges onto an acquiescent public. Most people consider that “Yes, I did overspend, therefore I do deserve this slap on the wrist. I’ll try harder not to get it wrong next time.”
But the truth is that these penalty charges are unlawful

http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/newsletter.php

In the Valle de San Felix, the purest water in Chile runs from rivers, fed by 2 glaciers.
Water is a most precious resource, and wars will be fought for it.
Indigenous farmers use the water, there is no unemployment, and they provide the second largest source of income for the area. Under the glaciers has been found a huge deposit of gold, silver and other minerals. To get at these, it would be necessary to break, to destroy the glaciers - something never conceived of in the history of the world - and to make 2 huge holes, each as big as a whole mountain, one for extraction and
one for the mine’s rubbish tip.

http://www.lineages.co.uk/

BANKS are being deluged by thousands of court actions a month as a consumer campaign against unfair penalty charges gains momentum.
Campaigners have called on customers to take banks to the small claims courts to get a refund of “unjust” charges - most of which are not legally enforceable, even if they are listed in the terms and conditions of an account or loan.

http://news.scotsman.com/uk.cfm?id=888322006

The question must be asked what is really important in this world profit and utter greed that would go to the extreme just to make a profit or human dignity and a world fit to live in for everybody and not just for the very few. Remember it’s the poor that suffer and the soldier that dies on the battlefield and for what?

Surely its about time the financial system was reformed to benefit the many and not the few and for all people.

Remember as Dr Johnston the writer of the great dictionary said the last refuge of a scoundrel is patriotism.
